"My daughter, Kendall, has been involved with the Children’s Choir at Charlotte Academy of Music for over a year. She is a second grader with a passion for music and singing. I had been looking for quite some time for a place for her to pursue and embrace her passion. Kendall has loved every minute of her involvement with the choir at the Academy. She enjoys the weekly practices and has made many new friends in the choir. I would highly recommend the Children’s Choir at The Academy of Music to anyone with a child with a passion for music."

children's choir

The Charlotte Academy Children’s Choir (CACC) is a special choir with musical instruction in all aspects of musical knowledge.  The children not only learn how to sing vocally well, but also develop an understanding of musical concepts through Kodaly, and Dalcroze teaching practices.

The choir designed for specifically for children in grades K-5.  At times, younger students are permitted if they prove that they are capable to handle the high expectations of the choir.  Even with high expectations, the director uses humor, and years of teaching experience to create a fun, and productive learning environment for the children.

The CACC offers performance opportunities throughout the year throughout the Charlotte area. They have performed the National Anthem at several Knight’s baseball games, as well as performed for the South Park Tree Lighting which was even featured on the front page of the Charlotte Observer.  They also have had the unique opportunity to sing with the Charlotte Concert Band at Queens University. The CACC also performs at the Academy's Winter and Spring Concerts.

Musical selections range from classical to Broadway.  Vocal health is also taught to help students better understand their voice, how to use it properly and how it works.

Our Children's Choral program also serves as a great opportunity for students already studying piano, guitar, flute or other instruments. Ear-training is an important part of learning to play a musical instrument and the CACC is a wonderful place to sharpen those skills.

kristen johnson, cacc director

Singing has been Kristen’s passion since she was a child growing up in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System.  She always knew she wanted to be a teacher and started taking piano lessons while in high school to prepare to be a chorus teacher.

Kristen holds a Bachelor of Music Degree from Meredith College where she studied voice under Lisbeth Carter and Dr. Lisa Fredenburgh.  For seven years Kristen taught middle and high school chorus in Charlotte-Mecklenburg’s arts magnet, Northwest School of the Arts.  She also taught piano and musical theatre in her tenure at Northwest and was the musical director for all middle school musicals.  Her students consistently scored Superior Ratings in sight-reading and performance and were often chosen for North Carolina Honors Chorus, All-State Chorus and All-County Chorus.  For the past two years Kristen taught elementary music at Chantilly Montessori and Villa Heights Academic Center.

Kristen has decided to take a year off from CMS to stay home with her new baby boy and 3 year old son but is thrilled to be back at Charlotte Academy of Music!  She firmly believes in learning to read music and proper technique for the voice and piano.  She encourages all students to sing in a choir in addition to studying privately.
